Chrome extensions

Small tools that make the browser easier on you.

Five extensions, one job each. Lumen is for your eyes, Steady and Hush are for your ears, Glide is for your hands, and Murmur is for focus and calm. They stay out of the way and tell you plainly what they're doing.

One job each, done properly.

LumenDark mode for every site

Lumen first gets the site to show its own dark theme, whether that theme is driven by JavaScript or only by CSS. If the page is still light, it inverts it and puts photos and video back to their real colors. Inversion keeps the original contrast, so anything readable in light stays readable in dark.

Order
Site's own dark theme first, inversion only as a fallback
Fallback
invert(1) hue-rotate(180°) contrast(0.9), with the exact inverse on media
Modes
Auto, Dark or Off, remembered per site
Cycle modes ⌥⇧D

SteadyVolume that stays in your comfort range

Steady keeps movies from whispering one minute and shouting the next. It lifts quiet dialog, tames explosions and leaves silence alone. It works on the tab's audio, so it also works on Netflix and other protected players.

Measured
A 34 dB swing in becomes 1.9 dB out on a dialog–explosion–dialog scene
Timing
Turns down in ~0.15 s, back up in ~1.2 s
Control
One comfort slider, from Quiet to Very loud
Toggle on this tab ⌥⇧L
Steady popup on a Netflix tab: status 'Leveling · boosting 8 dB', comfort level Medium.

HushNo more surprise sound

Hush stops videos and audio that start playing with sound on their own, on every site. Muted background videos keep playing, and anything you start yourself plays. Once you've started something on a page, its playlist carries on.

Stops
Autoplay with sound, and videos that unmute themselves
Allows
Silent autoplay, anything you click or key, and the playlist after it
Shows
A count on the toolbar icon of what it stopped on this page
On or off for this site ⌥⇧H
Hush popup on a news site: status 'Stopped 2 videos with sound', on for this site.

GlideHands-free scrolling

Glide scrolls at a steady reading pace, whether the page scrolls the window or a panel inside a web app like Gmail or Notion. At the end of an infinite feed it waits for more to load before stopping. Cinema mode lays every image and video out in one full-screen strip.

Speed
10–900 px/s, the same on 60 Hz and 120 Hz screens
Stops
At the end of the page, or when you press Esc
Cinema
Tuned for Reddit, 9gag, Tumblr, Pinterest and Imgur; a generic scanner everywhere else
Start or stop ⌥⇧S
Glide popup on Hacker News: status 'Scrolling · Esc to stop', speed 6.

MurmurBackground sound for focus and calm

Murmur plays rain, ocean waves and brown, pink or white noise to work, study or wind down to. The sound is generated in your browser, so there's nothing to download, and it keeps playing with the popup closed.

Sounds
Rain, waves, brown, pink and white noise, mixed with a slider each
Presets
Focus, Calm and Sleep
Timer
15 minutes to 90, fading out over the last 20 s
Play or stop ⌥⇧M
Murmur popup: Focus preset playing with 24 minutes left, rain and brown noise sliders raised.
Design language

Quiet by default, clear when it matters.

The rules every Ease product follows, so a new one looks like it belongs.

Principles

One job each

A product does one thing for one sense. If a feature needs its own explanation, it probably belongs in a different product.

Say what's happening

Every popup has one status line in plain words, such as "Inverted · no native dark theme". No jargon, no mystery badges.

Color means state

Interfaces are neutral zinc. Green means working as intended, amber means working with a fallback, red means it couldn't. Color never decorates.

Respect the page

Use the site's own behavior first, such as its own dark theme or its own scroll panel. Override only as a last resort, and undo cleanly.

Marks

A graphite tile with one white glyph. Same tile for every product; only the glyph changes.

tile 120 on a 128 grid corner radius 28 glyph area 64
  • Tile: 120 on a 128 grid, corner radius 28, a top-to-bottom gradient from #2C2C31 to #0C0C0E, and a 10% white hairline.
  • Glyph: white #FAFAFA, round caps, drawn inside the central 64. A secondary stroke sits at 35–45% opacity.
  • Toolbar sizes: at 16 and 32 px the tile is cropped to the edge and the glyph is scaled ×1.4, so it matches neighbouring icons on a dark toolbar.
  • Never recolor the tile per product, add a second color to the glyph, or put text in the mark.

Questions

Common questions

How do I make every website dark in Chrome?

Install Lumen. It first switches the site to its own dark theme, including themes that are only defined in the site's CSS. If the site has none, Lumen inverts the page and puts photos and video back to their real colors, so text keeps the contrast it had in light mode. You can set Auto, Dark or Off per site.

How do I stop videos from autoplaying with sound in Chrome?

Install Hush. It stops videos and audio that start playing with sound on their own, on every site. Muted background videos keep playing, anything you start with a click or key plays, and a page's playlist continues after you start it.

How do I stop movies being too quiet in dialog and too loud in action scenes?

Install Steady and turn it on for the tab. It lifts quiet dialog and turns loud scenes down automatically, keeping the volume in a comfort range you set with one slider. On a test scene it reduced a 34 dB swing to about 2 dB.

Can Chrome scroll a page automatically?

Yes, with Glide. It scrolls at a steady reading speed from 10 to 900 pixels per second, including inside web apps like Gmail and Notion, and waits for infinite feeds to load more before stopping. Press Esc to stop.

How do I play white noise or rain sounds in Chrome for focus?

Install Murmur. It plays rain, ocean waves and brown, pink or white noise, generated in your browser with nothing to download. Mix them with a slider each, or pick the Focus, Calm or Sleep preset, and set a timer that fades out gently. It keeps playing with the popup closed.

Do these extensions work on Netflix?

Steady does: it works on the tab's audio, so it also levels protected players like Netflix. Lumen leaves Netflix alone because it's already dark, and Hush lets anything you start play.

Do Ease extensions collect any data?

No. There are no accounts, analytics or servers. Settings are stored in your Chrome profile, and Steady never records or sends audio.

Are the Ease extensions free?

Yes. All five are free, with no ads. If they help you, you can support the work with a coffee.

Ease is made by one person. If these tools save your eyes, ears or hands, a coffee keeps them going, or you can support the work monthly on Patreon.

Privacy

Nothing leaves your browser.

No accounts, no analytics, no servers of ours. Your settings are stored in Chrome, and that's all.

Lumen
Stores your mode per site. To find a site's own dark theme, it may re-download stylesheets the page already loaded, without cookies.
Steady
Processes a tab's audio only after you turn it on for that tab. The audio is never recorded, stored or sent anywhere.
Hush
Stores on or off per site, and counts what it stopped in each open tab until the tab navigates or closes.
Glide
Stores your scroll speed. It only touches a tab when you click its icon or press its shortcut.
Murmur
Stores your mix and timer. Its sounds are generated in your browser; it makes no network requests.
